Image Specs for Social Media.
Social Media has demonstrated the crucial importance of visuals and aesthetics on their feed. If you visit many brands’ profiles, particularly marketing and beauty brands, you will notice their pages have been curated each element, fonts, and pictures, to combine harmoniously.
If you’re planning on using social media to promote your brand, whether, through ads or posts, it is highly recommendable to stay within the image spec rules. The closer you stay within these requirements, the more prone your ad is to get approved, remain visible, and look better overall.
Here’s a handy social media image specs cheat sheet.
Facebook.
An image of any dimensions of up to 1GB can be uploaded to a Facebook post, yet you will notice whenever you upload an image, Facebook automatically accommodates the image preview thumbnails as follows:
Vertical / Portrait photo
500 x 750
Horizontal / Landscape photo
500 px wide
Square image
500 x 500
Facebook Ad
1200 x 800
Instagram.
If you have ever tried uploading horizontal images to Instagram, you will notice that if these are stretched out beyond a 16:9 ratio (i.e.: 1920×1080, 2560×1440, etc), a message will show up mentioning that the image is too wide. Considering Instagram developers prioritized its mobile version, you should try to keep images at a 1:1 ratio or a 3:2 at most if uploading them as a post. Here are the recommended specs for Instagram posts and stories:
Instagram post (1:1).
1080 x 1080
(If you are creating a graphic in a design program, always set it to 300 sq. px.)
Instagram video post.
If you are uploading a video to Instagram, ensure it is at most 4MB in size. Keep it within the 1:1, 3:2 or 16:9 ratios.
TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram Stories.
Newer phones have a 9:16 screen which allows a more cinematic view when flipped horizontally. Yet if you are viewing stories on Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, individual users and ads are mostly used vertically. If you are creating a graphic to take up the entire the phone screen, make it into a 9:16 ratio, for example, 1080 x 1920 as a minimum.
